The portrait position
The portrait is the left cardinal, a — what shows up when a person walks into a room. It is the personality the world meets first: the manner, the surface temperament, the impression made before a word is spoken. Read its arcanum the way you read any position — in its light pole above the midline, its shadow below.
Crucially, the portrait is not the same as the soul. The centre, e, is who the person actually is; a is who they appear to be. A warm Empress portrait can sit over a guarded soul; a stern Emperor face can hide a tender centre. Naming that gap — between the face and the truth — is often the most useful thing a reading does.
