Start with five, not eighty
Your matrix has somewhere around 80 positions. If you open it cold and try to absorb all of them at once, you'll close the tab. Everyone does. The trick is to start with five — five positions that carry the most weight and that, between them, give you a real read on who you are, what you came in to learn, what you actually want, and how money moves toward you. Once those five make sense, the rest of the chart gets readable. Here's the order to take them in.
1. The Soul
The Soul sits at the dead center of the chart. It's the sum of all four pillars, reduced to a number between 1 and 22, and it's the headline of your whole lifetime. If anyone asks you what your matrix says about you and you only have ten seconds, you tell them your Soul arcana. To find it, look at the very middle of your chart — there's one number sitting there with everything else arranged around it. That's it.
Example — if your Soul is the 5, the Hierophant, your lifetime is built around teaching, tradition, and the tension between authority and authenticity. You came in to either uphold a structure or rebuild one. That's the headline. Everything else on the chart is texture under that headline.
2. The Four Pillars
The four pillars sit at the cardinal points of the chart — left, top, right, bottom. Left is your Personality, the version of you the world sees first. Top is the Sky pillar, sometimes read as the mother line, your inherited emotional and spiritual material. Right is the Money pillar, sometimes read as the father line, your inherited material relationship to resources. Bottom is the Roots pillar, the foundation, where you actually come from underneath all the inheritance.
Read them in order. Personality first — what shows up. Then Sky — what was given to you emotionally. Then Money — what was given to you materially. Then Roots — what sits underneath both of those gifts and inheritances. The four pillars together form the frame inside which the Soul does its work.
3. The Karmic Tail
The Karmic Tail is the three-arcana stack at the bottom of the chart — sometimes drawn as a triangle, sometimes as a triplet. It's what your soul carries in from before — the pattern you brought back to release this time. There are 26 named combinations of karmic tail, each with its own dynamic. If your karmic tail is the 14-11-3 combination, for example, you're working with a specific tension between equilibrium, strength, and creative force, and that tension has a recognizable shape across lifetimes.
Don't read the karmic tail as a sentence. It's not punishment. It's a pattern you're here to integrate. The more you understand it, the less it runs you in the background.
4. The Heart's Desire
The Heart's Desire sits at the U-point on the chart — the bottom-center position that holds what you actually want, underneath what you say you want and underneath what the four pillars suggest you should want. This is the position most people misread because it contradicts the Soul on purpose. The Soul is what you came in to learn. The Heart's Desire is what you came in to want. They're not always the same arcana, and when they diverge, the divergence is half the story of your life.
Find it at the bottom-center of the chart, between the karmic tail and the lower pillar. Read it last among the personal positions — once you know your Soul, the Heart's Desire either confirms or complicates it, and either reading is useful.
5. The Money Line
The Money Line runs diagonally inward from the Father pillar (C) — through three points, N then M then L — toward the centre, where it meets the Love Line. It shows you how money wants to reach you, where it originates, how it cycles, and where it lands. Each position holds one arcana, and reading them in sequence gives you a real picture of your financial architecture. This isn't about predicting your bank balance. It's about understanding the channel money is trying to come through.
If your Money Line runs through the Magician, the Empress, and the World, you have a fundamentally creative-generative financial channel. If it runs through the Hermit, the Tower, and the Star, you have a more disruptive, breakthrough-driven channel. Same arithmetic, very different shapes.
What to look at next
Once those five are clear, the rest of the chart starts opening up. Look at the pillar-by-pillar interactions — the points between the four pillars hold the middle ground between, say, your Personality and your Sky pillar, and they're where most of the texture of your daily life sits. Look at the chakra grid — the chart maps onto seven energy centers, and seeing which chakra is heaviest in your specific design tells you where your energy concentrates. Look at the year-by-year timeline if your chart software generates one — it'll show you the rotating arcana through each year of your life and give you a sense of what's incoming.
